School Websites Made Easy

DERI is working with the Galway Education Centre and the NCTE in assisting primary schools in setting up and maintaining their very own easy-to-use websites.
The type of website used (‘weblog’) allows teachers and their pupils to directly and regularly update online information in text, pictorial, audio or video format. The days of expensive website with outdated information can now be a thing of the past.

Approximately 24 Galway city and county primary schools are involved in this programme including: Scoil Chaitriona Junior , Carrabane National School , Scoil San Phroinsias , Cappataggle National School , Gaelscoi Mhic Amhlaigh, Woodlawn National School, St. Thomas National School Peterswell Scoil Chiaráin Naofa Doorus , Scoil Mhuire Clarinbridge, St. Gabriel’s Kilconnell, Briar Hill National School and Scoil Baile Nua.

However
it must be noted that due to issues such as youth/child Internet security and the standard
inter-connectivity of blogs, special permission and a registration
process needs to be undertaken with the NCTE for schools to have access
to specific blogs.

Environmental & Wildlife Project Websites

Some of our Outreach schools found Blogs were ideal as repositories for specific classroom projects. This was particularly true of the primary schools that participated in a ‘Birds in Our Locality’ initiative organised in conjunction with Galway County Council’s Heritage Office and the Galway Education Centre. That’s Class!

Some other educational establishments found blogs were a very effective way of promoting the use of Information technology in all classrooms by allowing each class teacher to have their own section within an overall school ‘blog’ structure e.g.
Scoil Chaitriona Junior (Galway City), St. Oliver Plunkett’s Primary School (Athenry) and Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh (Galway City)
